2013 may have been the year of the new consoles, but that didn”t mean there weren”t plenty of great games left over for the PC crowd. There were some masterful racers, some hella good shooters, and some excellent RTSs, but it was arguably the year where the indie scene finally started to crack into the mainstream.

The success of games like Papers, Please and Gunpoint proved that independent games weren”t undiscovered relics poised only for the most hardcore crowd, but games that could be discovered and enjoyed by all. Even if you were the one playing it first.

It wasn”t game over for big budget titles, of course, with Battlefield 4, Tomb Raider and Blizzard”s Heart of the Swarm, leading the way in their respective genres, albeit with some initial teething problems. So while indie may be the place for the hot new talent to shine, 2013 was the year that proved both AAA and budget releases can live harmoniously – and successfully – side-by-side.
